Frequently asked questions
- Who made this site? Someone very nice. See the about page.
- I forgot my link, how do I find it? Go to the front page and enter your address again, exactly as if it were the first time. You will get the same link back.
- Can I change my link? I want /joe instead of /2z8a. Yes. Go to https://scr.im/edit/[your link], press the button, and we will email you a one-time key. That key opens a page showing how many times your link has been looked up and when it last was, and you can rename it or remove your address from there. Or enter your address on the front page and follow the edit link in the message.
- Can I get a QR code for my link? Yes, one comes with every link. It is on the page you see when you create a link, and on the page your key opens — with a printable copy to download for a poster, a business card or a notice board.
- Can I keep my link but change the address behind it? Changing your email address is about the worst thing you can do to your online presence, but: change your old link to something random, which frees the memorable one, then register it again with the new address.
- Please remove my address from your database. You can do it yourself, and you only need to know your own address: https://scr.im/remove. We email that address a link, and one press removes it — so this works even if somebody else put your address here and you have no idea which link it sits behind. If you do know the link, https://scr.im/remove/[that link] is one step shorter. See the privacy page for what we hold and what we never do with it.
- I never got the email with the key. Check your spam folder. The key only ever goes to the address behind the link, which is what stops a stranger from taking your link — so if it does not arrive, the address on file may not be yours.
- The humanity check is too easy, I could brute-force it with a script. That used to be fair comment. The old check showed your browser the answer among nine options and let you retry forever. The check now makes your browser spend real computing work on a puzzle, and we cap how many addresses one visitor can reveal. A person notices neither; a scraper runs out of both patience and budget.
- Does scr.im stop spam completely? No, and it never claimed to. A human can always pass the check, read an address and abuse it. What this stops is the bulk, automated harvesting that finds plain-text addresses on public pages.
- Your site looks odd in my very old browser. It should work in anything current, on a phone or a desktop. The humanity check needs JavaScript.
- Which whisky is the best one? If there had to be only one, without a nanosecond of hesitation: Lagavulin. Unparalleled.
